MacBook Running Slowly: Practical Checks

Check storage, open apps and recent changes before installing cleanup tools. Use macOS settings and Apple’s current support guidance for your model.

A simple explanation

Many open apps, low available storage, background tasks or battery and hardware conditions can affect responsiveness.

Step-by-step checks

  1. Save work and restart the Mac, then wait for startup activity to settle.
  2. Quit apps and browser tabs you are not using; check Activity Monitor only to observe unusually busy apps.
  3. Review available storage in macOS settings and move or remove only files you understand and have backed up.
  4. Install macOS updates from System Settings when convenient and follow Apple’s instructions for your model.

Troubleshooting notes

Avoid third-party “cleaner” apps and do not remove system files. Back up important data before major changes.
