What to do before setting up a new phone

A little preparation can make setting up a new phone feel more manageable. You do not need to rush, and you can ask for help before moving anything.

Gather the basics

Keep your old phone, new phone and any charging cables nearby. Make sure you know which email address or account you use with the old device. Never send your password to someone in a message.

Check your backup

If you already use the phone’s built-in cloud backup, check when it last completed. Photos and contacts may sync separately, so think about what matters most before you begin. If you’re unsure, pause and consult the phone maker’s official instructions.

Keep both phones available

Many setup processes ask you to confirm a prompt on your old device. Keep it charged and connected until you have checked that your important information is available on the new phone.

Take your time

Follow the setup prompts at your own pace. If something looks unfamiliar, pause and ask the manufacturer or your service provider before sharing a verification code.
